Conundrum 2010: A white wine blend that stands out

White wine grapes /Michell Locke

We’re used to buying wine by the grape variety _ cabernet sauvignon, merlot, sauvignon blanc, and that’s fine. But a blended wine can be very good, too … we’ve come a long way since the days when jugs of generic red and white were bywords for plonk.

A recent wine I tried, Conundrum 2010, was an example of just how nuanced a blended wine can be. It tastes like chardonnay on the way in with typical vanilla and ripe apple. Then you’re suddenly tasting the bright citrus of sauvignon blanc followed up by a hit of white pepper from viognier and finished off by the sweetness of muscat canelli and semillon. This would be a great wine to spring on your friend with the “sophisticated” palate who can pick out, or thinks she can pick out, a grape from 50 paces. Cheers to me, I picked up on the muscat and chardonnay, no surprise since moscato was my summer staple and chardonnay my all-time fave, but the rest had me flummoxed.

We had this wine with cheese and crackers, roast chicken and vegetables and stir-fried shrimp and tofu. So, a fairly varied selection. This is one of the few white wines rich and hearty enough to stand up to the ultimate taste test: Thanksgiving.

How much did I like this wine? Well, I got my first bottle as a sample and then bought another at Costco for $16.99. Greater love hath no wine blogger.

Cheers.
